Why choose a male therapist?

There's no rule that says a man has to see a male therapist. Plenty of men do brilliant work with female therapists. But for some men, having a man in the chair opposite makes the first few sessions easier — and the deeper work possible.

Where it tends to matter

  • When the issue is specifically about being a man — fatherhood, masculinity, sexuality.
  • When you've struggled to be honest with women in your life and want to test what that's about.
  • When you want a working relationship that doesn't trigger old dynamics around your mother or partner.

Where it doesn't

For a lot of work, the gender of your therapist is far less important than their training, experience and how well you click. If a brilliant female therapist comes recommended for what you're bringing, that's a good signal.
