Where it tends to matter
- When the issue is specifically about being a man — fatherhood, masculinity, sexuality.
- When you've struggled to be honest with women in your life and want to test what that's about.
- When you want a working relationship that doesn't trigger old dynamics around your mother or partner.
Where it doesn't
For a lot of work, the gender of your therapist is far less important than their training, experience and how well you click. If a brilliant female therapist comes recommended for what you're bringing, that's a good signal.
